Review from d1Mnzz

Jiraiya is an AoE character, who has the option to change his mind and become your primary Tank instead.

Anyone who follows my posts or understands the way I view the game will immediately be able to tell why I love his design from the get-go. Having the flexibility to do multiple roles (even if it’s not at the same time) is always going to make me give props to a character. Jiraiya’s field and buddy skills perfectly build on to that, allowing him to be utilized as either an active unit (spamming Barriers and counter attacking enemies) or as a passive unit(bolstering your defense against Skill while building up his Chakra for the finisher).

  • Starting with the active approach, Jiraiya’s regular jutsu blocks an almost stupid amount of damage for an equally unreasonable number of turns – when you take into account it also happens to refund 2 Chakra, it’s easily the strongest self Barrier in the game, leaving even the infamous Hinata in the dust, putting Tobirama to shame and allowing Jiraiya to stack it three times for a total of 12k shield – if that doesn’t qualify him as a viable Tank, I don’t know what will.
  • On the other hand, if you’re already rocking an Obito/Naruto as your Tank and aren’t interested in replacing him – fear not, Jiraiya’s secret and his strength as a DPS will definitely leave you satisfied & smiling. When he’s rocking an 18x multiplier on an AoE secret, what do you expect will happen? Not only does it hit for well over 22k raw damage, his secret also happens to have a 90% chance to inflict Slip on its targets – the Sannin’s approach to putting out a fire is basically pouring gasolina on it.

Video for his attack and both jutsus provided thanks to antonlab – Jiraiya’s body looks a bit weird when he’s standing around, but that secret’s animation more than makes up for it in my eyes, literal straight fire.

The obvious drawbacks for this character are his attack – even when Syncing up with Body, it can only reach 1346, granted this is similar to Itachi and Hashirama, when viewed outside of the Element it’s certainly frowned upon – and his Chakra costs being 6/12 – which is a problem that in a way resolves itself thanks to the amount of damage he delivers on his secret and the regular jutsu partially refunding itself. These issues and can easily be worked around, which is exactly what you wouldn’t expect from a “random” Banner unit – someone at Bandai HQ must love the Toad Sage.

I assume a lot of people (myself included) will be broke thanks to the Light and Shadow double headliner, so do you guys want to hear the best part about this unit’s kit for someone on a budget? His duplicates are irrelevant. While that’s not actually accurate, it’s what I would qualify as true enough or to be clear – having them isn’t going to significantly impact this unit’s power level, so all you need to do is get lucky once and you’ll be good to go.

Is Jiraiya a top 20 character for Body?

One of the few recent units I can say doesn’t reek of his particular Element’s flaws – remarkable job by the design team in this regard and what Body needs more of.

Jiraiya easily enters the top 10 for his Element, coming in at rank #6 in the current version of my list and the #1 pick when it comes to AoE, easily doing more damage than Hashirama, Itachi and Tenten on his secret.

To mix things up a bit, instead of going into the usual comparisons – which as I’ve already pointed out will prove moot, as Jiraiya is the best at what he does in this Element, at least in PvE but more on that later – I’d rather take a look at his place on a mono team.

Starting with the basics, most people want to run a 99 luck character, so generally you’ll see either 4T Naruto or Obito occupying that “slot” – conveniently, they both have the Tank role and are usually paired with the likes of Kimimaro (increasing their damage reduction) or Oboro (swapping in to Dodge dangers and secret techniques) – which is where the new Jiraiya comes in for me with the passive approach.

When facing Heart or Body, most of the time you don’t really need to run a Tank – as long as you have enough healing or an abundance of damage, you’ll be set – so Jiraiya’s buddy skill reducing damage specifically against Skill is what you both want and need. Naruto only reduces damage by 20% and has a very low amount of health, while Obito in the best case scenario only reduces Skill damage by 40% (if you can line up a long range front line for Sync Skills) which falls slightly short of what a Yugito or Sasuke can do for other Elements.

I would personally much rather use Jiraiya’s buddy skill – which costs 0 Chakra – to boost these two units’ tanking capabilities than use him as a Tank himself, but this is where the Oboro comparison comes in – if you’re getting hit so hard that an Obito tanking with a Jiraiya behind him isn’t enough to stop the bleeding, you can “emergency swap-in” with the Sannin and save the day, sacrificing only what ends up being a net-3-Chakra to do so. Also, unlike Oboro, with 12 Chakra thanks to the refunding mechanic Jiraiya can stop a lot more damage and for a lot longer, giving Obito more time to get his jutsus ready again.

Safely assuming you’ve survived up to reaching 12 Chakra with the Sage and entered the boss fight, it’s time to switch over to his damage, where he has a couple of key advantages over the AoE Slip Trinity he competes with – Itachi, Shisui, Tenten – all of them have Slip on their regular jutsu (usually meaning a lower % of Slip), with a lower chance to hit and with smaller hitboxes. Jiraiya is easily your best option when picking a passive AoEunit, which in my eyes is perfectly in line with his kit’s identity.

The only reason our beloved Sannin couldn’t go any further up the Body list was taking PvP into account, where he unfortunately can’t do very well – but instead of talking about what he can’t do, lets first see how he performs doing what he was meant to do – dominating in PvE.

PvE – Emergency Missions, Impacts, Ninja Road, Phantom Castle

Jiraiya wasn’t built for the easy Missions – his jutsus are specifically set up to carry you in the toughest circumstances possible i.e. when facing the dreaded Skill units for those sweet 15 pearls, netting him the coveted position in the S Tier for this area of the game. Furthermore, in the sometimes equally annoying Body vs Body match-up, he can almost fully forfeit his damage to become an invincible Tank and still get your team over the finish line, kicking and screaming.

Disclaimer: Ninja Road and Phantom Castle won’t be affecting my rankings or PvE Tier, but I’ll talk about them here regardless.

  • Ninja Road – aside from doing some funny 50k Barrier runs, Jiraiya’s Chakra costs will keep him off the short list for speedruns. On a regular mob clearing team, he’ll be more than welcome – even when the Element restriction is removed Jiraiya is a very strong AoE unit.
  • Phantom Castle – Don’t do this to yourself, there’s no point, you’re just opening the door for a War Sakura to wreck you while you’re fucking around trying to get 12 Chakra to spew frog gasolina on your enemies. There are much better units you can run to get a 3-4 turn win, Jiraiyadoesn’t realistically belong here.

PvP – Ninja World Clash

Unfortunately for the Sannin, he doesn’t have enough going for him to be a viable contender for a PvP slot.

Ignoring his attack being relatively bad, Jiraiya’s health isn’t too great either – any Slip jutsu with an Utakata follow up will instantly kill him, before he can use his Barrier – because it costs 6 Chakra to do.

What’s worse is that his jutsu not delivering any damage, providing immediate defense or having the option to generate Chakra almost immediately “disqualifies” him as a viable front line unit – the likes of Haku, OG Naruto, Chidori Sasuke.

While it’s possible to just use his 276 speed to accelerate your first or second slot, then swap to the back and wait for his 6 Chakra Barrier, it will end up creating a “lane” that’s either too slow or too easy to kill – making it irrelevant at best and a liability at worst.

Unless you have a very specific idea of what you want to do with Jiraiya, it’s best to leave him out of this fight – I gave him a generous C when it comes to Tiers here.

No matter what your collection looks like, you can’t deny the addition of the legendary Sannin has you at least a little bit excited – he is an exceptional AoE pickup, a solid Tank and rides a giant frog into battle, what more could you want?!

That said, Jiraiya shares his Banner with another Sannin… The total Pearl cost comes in at 210, with various discounts along the way for a total of 5 steps. My advice is to do the first step – which costs only 30 Pearls – and call it a day for two reasons:

  1. Lets just say pulling the other featured character from this Banner on the 5th & guaranteed step is the less desirable outcome for now – I’ll be looking at Orochimaru fully next.
  2. From my understanding, there is another Blazing Fest incoming and while it shouldn’t have any steps, we won’t know for sure until it’s here and the majority of the top 10 characters in Blazing are locked inside that Banner, so make of that what you will.

If you love the Toad Sage too much to let these two things stop you and/or are made of money Pearls, feel free to go through all the steps and hopefully grab your copy of Jiraiya and solidify both your Body and rainbow teams.
